C4SM - Help Protect FONM - Sweep out Invasive French Broom

French Broom (Genista monspessulana) is a nasty, tenacious, highly invasive plant. Both the plant and seeds are toxic to animals and other plant life, even native plants.

Volunteers are invited to help with our eradication project and our efforts to restore the Fort Ord habitat with the native plants that properly belong there.  Bring water and gloves.  Tools and a meal will be provided.

Pre-registration is required 5 days in advance of each volunteer event.  Get more details and sign up by contacting John Mott at (831) 324-0277 or emailing sustainableeastgarrison@gmail.com

Using the Weed Wrench

As a perennial, French broom will grow back from the root crown unless the taproot is removed.

The most efficient tool for removing French Broom is the “weed wrench”.  The tool uses the physics of a lever to multiply your strength against uprooting the entire plant.

Watch the video below to see how it’s done!
