Supporting the Community

Our work is rooted in Monterey County, where local action can spark meaningful, lasting change. We champion regenerative practices that restore ecosystems, strengthen community resilience, and inspire stewardship. By partnering with civic leaders, educators, businesses, and fellow nonprofits, we build collaborative pathways toward a more sustainable future.

Our Structure and Impact

Communities for Sustainable Monterey County is evolving to be more inclusive and more responsive to the needs of our region. We are centering our work on four practice areas that bring together residents, partners, projects, and actions across Monterey County.

This practice-area approach allows us to support emerging initiatives, strengthen partnerships, and share knowledge countywide, creating a more connected and resilient network for climate action.

With the support of 6,000+ community members and an average of 9,000 volunteer hours each year, our efforts advance practical solutions through our work in four Practice Areas:

Food and Soil Health

Transition to organic, humane farming methods that minimize the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, no-till farming, cover cropping, and crop rotation to enhance soil health, sequester carbon and preserve ecosystem biodiversity. Foster regional and community resilience by fostering plant-based diets, and consumption of locally grown, seasonal crops. Recognize and preserve cultural heritage by nurturing food sovereignty.

Nature Restoration

Re-wilding, native plants and trees, promoting biodiversity. Preserving, protecting and restoring the soil, land, water, and air for the benefit of nature and people. Promoting biodiversity for resilience against invasive species, man-made pollution, and climate stressors.

Home Green Living

Protect water sources, electrify everything, renewable energy and zero carbon transportation alternatives of public transportation, walking, biking, electric vehicles, and energy use in homes and cooking.

Waste Reduction

Reduce single-use plastics and promote reuse/recycling and alternative packaging solutions, community clean ups. Encourage widespread adoption of composting programs for organic waste to reduce methane emissions from landfills and improve soil health.
