C4SM-Help-Protect-FONM-Sweep-out-Invasive-French-Broom.jpg

French Broom (Genista monspessulana) is a nasty, tenacious, highly invasive plant. Both the plant and seeds are toxic to animals and other plant life, even native plants.

Volunteers are invited to help with our eradication project and our efforts to restore the Fort Ord habitat with the native plants that properly belong there.  Bring water and gloves.  Tools will be provided.

Pre-registration Required:
Monterey County requires all participants to pass online Munitions Training at:
http://fortordsafety.com .

Submit a copy of your completion certificate to:
sustainableeastgarrison@gmail.com at least 3 days before each event.

Using the Weed Wrench

As a perennial, French broom will grow back from the root crown unless the taproot is removed.

The most efficient tool for removing French Broom is the “weed wrench”.  The tool uses the physics of a lever to multiply your strength against uprooting the entire plant.

Watch the video below to see how it’s done!
