Earth-Friendly Households
Sustainable Del Rey Oaks is proud to announce our Earth-Friendly Households Checklist. (A project of Lance Wright from Sustainable Pacific Grove.) Once you have at least 55 items checked off, you can become a Certified Earth-Friendly Household and win an Earth Flag to proudly display at your home. You will also become part of the DRO Earth-Friendly Group, discussing ways to become more sustainable in our everyday lives.Print out the flyer and checklist. Directions are on the flyer
Butterfly Garden
The Butterfly Garden, located behind Church of the Oaks next to the tennis courts, is a demonstration project for integrated pest management, created through a grant from the Monterey Regional Stormwater Management Program. It includes a barn owl box, an example of natural rodent control without using harmful poisons. The box was donated to SDRO by the Monterey Peninsula Waste Management District (landfill). The landfill has 10 similar boxes with many barn owl family residents. Check out their live webcam <link: https://www.youtube.com/embed/live_stream?channel=UCK8FbhxiNdU9Trcl3S3qlmA> to see owlets eating, growing, and fledging. Sustainable Del Rey Oaks has formed “Friends of Arroyo del Rey”
Arroyo del Rey is the perennial creek that meanders through the city of Del Rey Oaks along Highway 218, the Frog Pond, and through Del Rey and Work Memorial Parks before continuing into Laguna Grande, Lake Roberts, and finally the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. The Friends of Arroyo del Rey plan to gather existing information about the creek and watershed and work with community members, local partners, and educators to study, protect, and restore the riparian habitat of Del Rey Oaks. Can we interest you in joining us?
A Little About Who We Are and What We Do
Sustainable Del Rey Oaks was launched in 2019 as the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability with some dedicated residents who were interested in creating a more sustainable future by fostering environmental and community-building initiatives for the health, safety, and resilience of our residents, city, and region.
This group joined CSMC later in 2019 after their inaugural event at Sustainable Seaside’s Earth Day celebration. We continue to be made up of volunteers with different talents who are dedicated to protecting the environment and educating others about sustainable practices, in collaboration with other like-minded groups.
