CSMC was founded in 2005 to promote equitable implementation of sustainable practices and to combat climate change through volunteer-based local action groups. Projects include Earth Day events, habitat protection, plastic pollution reduction, community gardens, advocacy, and outreach. Funding from events supports project replication and resource sharing among action groups.
